refined selector and esteemed producer, steve braiden breaks out on his own with the off out label after some excellent releases for the likes of rush hour and joy orbison s now defunct doldrums label. its a good day when there is some new braiden productions to soak up, and hopefully the establishment of off out will see them appear with more regularity in the future. as an opening statement, apex of the sun s way is a powerful one indeed! the title track is characterised by the sort of rhythmic poise we have come to expect from a braiden production, with searing emotive textures rubbing up against some of the crispest drums heard this year. - solar poise- is equally memorable, with strange ghostly vocals trapped deep in the mix and an unpredictable synth careening around the channels.

mulen marks the arrival of its second vinyl with the release aloft from tish. this kiev-based lady is definitely seen as a key player in the ukrainian underground. the original mix of aloft is stripped-down vogue techno with a funky baseline and tick-tock percussion. the track is flashing out the skippy, atmospheric style one might call mulen s signature sound. under number two we have samples of silence where tish explores possibilities of rhythm and space. the track progresses through a clean path of precision drums to a warmer meditative lead. on the b-side cadenza native valentino kanzyani plugs 9 minute remix of the titled aloft. quoting a minimal running techno, kanzyani stockpile some much-needed tension while keeping the arrangement uncluttered. his hypnotic groove beneath a blunted and ponderous baseline deliver us a darker, more cosmic vibe.

what do people like balihus daniel wang and royksopp have in common? they write nice things like this about our (not so) new talent kid on the block. polosh superproducer maximilian skiba! music from a very good young polish producer, warm chords, funky melodies, think bass and guitars by chic meeting a string section by beethoven, with a touch of italo-disco and almost flamenco-like soul daniel wang he produces very nice italo disco tracks, im a fan royksopp. shanghouse is an instant hit. i would say instant classic if this wasnt so daft and meaningless. if you just heard it 5 times and feel the need to put it on another time. thats shanghouse by max skiba. then theres a great remix by victor rosado and a great slightly diverse prins thomas edit of korsakot another track.
the km editions series, admirably helmed by the mysterious keyboard masher, has always been one of the more interesting re-edit/rework labels. past installments have touched on krautrock, disco, balearica, funk, italo and what can only be described as electronic oddities. this sixth volume offers up three more impressively remixed, overdubbed and reedited gems. theres naturally much to admire, not least the omd style woozy synth-pop of stolen shapes (stealing rework), which should tickle the fancy of anyone of a balearic disposition. the same can be said about the immersive, sun-kissed pianos and shuffling grooves of -astral playground. there s also a chunk of silly but, perversely, rather good french cod-reggae in the shape of le cod-, arguably our pick of a strong bunch.

in about 2003 i did some work for deepfunk and northern soul legend keb darge and as was the way back then i received payment in vinyl. included in the pile was this little detroit number which i instantly fell in love with. in 1980 david mcmurray and adell shavers and david mcmurray (who went on to be a member of 80s hit band was not was) wrote and produced this amazing detroit modern / boogie 45 which for some reason suffered the same fate of many of aotn releases and disappeared from history. but thanks to the generation of collectors before me this gem sat safely in northern collection such as kebs for years waiting for its day in the sun. it only got limited play but recently the record has had a resurgence in popularity and value which it deserves. after a tip off from jason stirland (soulstax records) i found david mcmurray and it was wonderful to find he was keen to help me bring this wonderful 45 back into the limelight. so here we are
